Obituary of Laura Smith

Laura Smith, affectionately known as grandmom, 94, of Bridgeton passed away on Friday, December 27, 2019 at the Eagleview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsgrove Twp. Born in Bridgeville, DE to the late William Johnson and Mable Handy Johnson, she was the wife of the late Lawrence “Greenie” Smith. Laura came to the Bridgeton area in 1957 with her family where she was a resident most of her life. Prior to her retirement, Laura had been employed as a cook at Test City Child Care in Bridgeton for many years. She had been previously employed at Hunts, PJ Ritter, MC Schrank and Major Clothing all in Bridgeton. She was a member of Mount Vernon Holy Church in Salem County. In her free time she enjoyed gardening and cooking, especially fried chicken and greens. Her family described her as a giving and nurturing person who always had someone in her care. She is survived by; her daughter, Zelda Hart-Byrd and her husband Ronald E. of Bridgeton; nine grandsons, Tony Hart, Jr. of Pittsgrove Twp., Andre M. Hart of Bridgeton, Kevin O. Hart of Bridgeton, Christopher L. Hart of National Park, Maurice Johnson of Bridgeton, Marvin Wiggins of CT, Kevin Wiggins of CT, Marcell White of CT, Mahlon Johnson of Millville; six great-grandchildren, Dijihira, T'Azjsha, Kaliesha, Sianni, Carter and Peyton; her goddaughter, Juanita Hudson-Douglas; her niece, Mary Ann Planter and three bonus sons, Jerry Johnson, Joey Johnson and Raymond Johnson all of DE. She was preceded in death by; her husband, Lawrence “Greenie” Smith; her son, Maurice Johnson; her sister, Ida Johnson and the father of her children, Arthur B. Johnson. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. on Saturday, January 4th at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Gouldtown Memorial Park in Fairfield Twp. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 9 AM to 11 AM prior to the services.
