My sincere condolences to the family of Alfred "Bucky" Tharp. During the year 1968/1969, I was a student in his class at Hopewell Township school. Mr Tharp, as we called him, was an inspiration and a mentor to all the students he taught. We were his family and the students felt special in his presence. Many class discussions were based on his time in the military. He showed us videos and pictures of what life was like in Vietnam. I am thankful I had the opportunity to have him as my 8th grade teacher. He was one of the best.

I just learned of Mr. Tharp's passing. He was my favorite teacher and inspired a lifelong love of biology. He also helped give me confidence as an athlete, something I didn't have much of when I started 8th grade. Every week or so, the 8th-grade boys would have some outside time with Mr. Tharp or Mr. Bond. When we played baseball, Mr. Tharp would be the steady pitcher. One of those days, I came up to bat, and the outfield and infield moved in, as usual. One of my best friends was at third base. Mr. Tharp turned to him and said something like "You better back up, Mike, or Billy's going to hit it over your head." I remember Mike giving a dismissive wave. Sure enough, Mr. Tharp's prediction came true. I hit the ball up and over Mike's head and got an easy single. I don't know whether he pitched me the ball in such a way that I was more likely to do that or if his words were enough inspiration to make me aim the ball in that direction. But it was one of my best school days ever.

Mr. Tharp was my 8th grade science teacher where I learned to like dissecting frogs (I took Biology in high school & dissected more than frogs). & not only was he a very good teacher but a good dance partner as well (8th grade teacher crush). He will be missed.

I will always remember Mr Tharp and his quiet confidence. Wish I had the opportunity to thank him personally for his service to our country, both in the military and afterwards as a teacher and mentor to so many .

I met Bucky some years ago through his dealings with the VA. He had an infectious smile and was a bright light whenever he and I encountered one another. Although we served in different eras, Bucky was my Army brother. His passing brings me great sorrow and I am heartbroken for his family. However, I pray that Bucky is at peace and that his family finds peace in the love and memories they shared over the years. Until we meet again, my brother, rest easy.

So sorry to hear of Bucky's passing. First met Bucky 54 years ago as members of same rifle platoon in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. An instantly likable person, Bucky had a gregarious demeanor and was always ready with smile. Aside from being just a very good man, he was an extraordinary soldier. He rose from Private to the rank of Sgt.1st Class in about 18 months. This was practically unheard of in those days. This alone speaks volumes about his extraordinary ability, and his dedication to both country and to his platoon mates. For all to be known, many of us may be blessed to yet walk this earth due to Bucky's dedication and to his timely reactions under difficult circumstances. Was so grateful to have reconnected after so many years at our "Grunt's at Mumf''s" army reunion a few years back. I am a much better person to have known him. Heart felt condolences to his wife Marilyn and to all his family and friends. Rest in God's Peace old friend.
Photo is very early on during army training and shows his big ready smile that we all admire.

After I saw Beth's comment about where she had been, I thought about how long it had been that we cousins saw each other. I certainly didn't want it to be this way. Dave and I are so sorry about Bucky's passing. Time is unfortunately flying by for all of us. I hope to be able to see you on Wednesday. Love to all of you. I'm beginning to understand what my mother said about the family getting smaller all the time.

Mr Tharp was a great man. He was my favorite teacher while I attended Hopewell as a student and favorite colleague of mine, as I had the pleasure of teaching with him as well. He was passionate about teaching and his students knew that. He helped me become as knowledgeable and strong with the Tech Lab at Hopewell Crest School and it is because of him the students now and in the future will have so much fun learning. Mr Tharp you will be missed but not forgotten.
