Obituary of James H. Stannard

Mr. Stannard was predeceased by his wife, Adeline (Weence) Walker; who he married on June 8, 1950 in San Rafael, California. They lived in Mill Valley and San Rafael, California until 1973 when they moved to Basking Ridge, NJ. In 1996 they moved to Lawrenceville, GA and then moved to Vineland, NJ in 2005. Mr. Stannard is survived by five children; James Walker Stannard, Carol Louise Albert, Ronald Walker Stannard, Sarah Elizabeth (Beth) Stannard and Virginia Frances (Daisy) Cameron; and predeceased by a 1 son, Frederick B. (Ricky) Stannard. They have eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In 1961, Mr. Stannard left P.G. & E. to found his own Engineering consulting firm in San Rafael. He remained active as a consultant until his death. Mr. Stannard became known as an expert Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) having devised the concept of the expander cycle for the production of LNG. The first of such LNG plants was constructed for the San Diego Gas & Electric Company after Mr. Stannard prepared both the technical and financial feasibility studies for the plant. He continued to serve as a consultant during and after the plant's construction. He was the lead consultant on another six LNG plants in the US. He also provided engineering advice for other LNG facilities both in the United State and overseas. His knowledge of the gas industry included the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Lp-Gas or Propane) industry where he was involved in both design and safety concerns. Mr. Stannard also was involved with the safety and design review of several nuclear power plants.
Patents in both the fields of LNG and pressurized storage of both LNG and LP-Gas were in his name. Mr. Stannard was a registered Professional Engineer in numerous states, was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served on six Technical Committees of the National Fire Protection Association and chaired the Committees of LNG (NFPA 59A), Utility Gas Plants (NFPA 59) and Compressed Natural Gas (NFPA 54). He was the author of a number of technical papers and has testified before both state and federal legislative committees.
