Walter L. Thompson, 72, of Upper Deerfield Twp. passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Delaware.
Born in Athens, West Virginia to the late Theodore C. Thompson and Virginia L. Journey Thompson, he was the husband of Cathy L. Frazer Thompson. He had been a resident of Upper Deerfield Twp. for over 40 years and prior to that he had resided in Bridgeton and West Virginia.
Prior to his retirement in 2010, he had worked as a fork lift operator for Gerresheimer
Glass Co. formerly Kimble Glass Co. in Vineland for over 30 years. He was formerly employed by Owen's Illinois Glass Co. in Bridgeton.
Walter is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp serving during the Vietnam Conflict and was awarded a purple heart. He had attended First Wesleyan Church in Bridgeton. In his free time, Walter enjoyed maintaining his lawn and garden. He enjoyed growing cucumbers, squash and lima beans but his specialty was tomatoes. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Walter was also a motorcycle enthusiast and loved to ride his Honda motorcycles. His family described him as a handy man who could fix just about anything.
He is survived by; his loving wife, Cathy L. Thompson of Upper Deerfield Twp.; his four children, Kenneth A. Thompson (Julie) of Hopewell Twp., Kevin L. Thompson (Rebecca) of Upper Deerfield Twp., Diana A. Springer (Joshua) of Upper Deerfield Twp. and Crystal N. Nardelli (Jason) of Hopewell Twp.; eight grandchildren, Victoria, Erica, Rachel, Luke, Haelee, Hunter, Jesse and Harper; his siblings, Shirley A. Thompson-Devore of Elgin, SC and David H. Thompson (Linda) of Athens, WV; his sister in law, Darlene Thompson of Athens, WV and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ruth E. Howington, Ruby J. Johnson, Cleve J. Thompson, Peggy L. Hall, Robert E. Thompson and Bertha L. Thompson.
Funeral services will be held at First Wesleyan Church, 200 Laurel Heights Dr., Bridgeton on Tuesday, December 28th at 12 Noon. Interment will take place at Cumberland County Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Hopewell Twp. Friends will be received at the church from 11 AM to 12 Noon prior to the services.
