Obituary of Donald Albert Cain

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
March 10th, 1937. The day a hero entered this world. We just called him Dad. The second son of Samuel and Alice (Worrell) Cain. Donald A. Cain was a mountain of a man with two very big shoulders, both of which we counted on. One of those shoulders was given to his siblings: Sam Cain(Betty), Joseph Cain(Betty Jane), Walter Evans(deceased), Anna May Hitchner(deceased), Alice Evans, Linda Coombs(Leslie), Marrianne Knapp, and Diane Umphenour(Sam). The other shoulder was for us, those who loved him most, his wife and children. It was upon those shoulders he would carry us for the next 65 years. While swimming at Sunset Lake in Bridgeton in the summer of 1952, he met a beautiful 16 year old girl by the name of Mildred Garrison, that would forever be his love and inspiration. We have the privilege of calling her Mom. They married the 22nd day of January 1954. For 65 wonderful years they shared a life of love and devotion, setting an example for all to admire. Their commitment to each other would lead them through the birth of five children: daughter Janet Cresenzo(Phillip), sons, Donald Jr.(Sharon), Douglas (Sherry), Gregory (Stephenie), and Kevin (Colleen). The responsibility of raising his large family could not have been easy, but he never faltered. I can't remember having excess, but he always made sure we had enough. Dad served his country as a proud member of the Air Force, and then his community as a police officer for the city of Bridgeton, all the while working a second job as a carpenter to provide for his family. Dad eventually turned to carpentry full time operating his own business for many years, proudly teaching all of his sons his craft. Referred to as "The Mayor" he retired as an inspector for the Camden Housing Authority. It’s pretty awesome as a child knowing it was your mother that married Superman. It also left us with impossible shoes to fill, but that won't stop his sons from trying to walk in them. After all, that was his plan. Should we fall short, it won't be for lack of trying. Defender of all things good and decent and a fierce protector of his family from all things that weren't. Superman never dies, he is just called to another mission. Heaven must of needed a hero. Our hero. Our dad. On the afternoon of April 10, 2019, we gathered at his bedside to say goodbye. I was able to look at my brothers and realize Dad was not leaving us, for I could see our father in each of them. As long as we live, as long as our children live, and their children, he lives. His legacy will continue through his twenty-three grand children and nineteen great grandchildren, along with countless nieces and nephews. So instead of saying goodbye, we kissed him and said goodnight. For morning will come again and we will once more hear him say, "rise and shine my little chickadees.” Our rock, our hero, our Dad. Superman. The best anyone can say when we depart from this life is that you were a good husband, a good father, and a good man. Our dad was all of these. He was the best of these.
