Obituary of David J. Eddowes, Esq

David J. Eddowes, Esq., 78, of Bridgeton, New Jersey passed away on April 18, 2023 while a patient at Select Specialty Hospital in Atlantic City.
Born on October 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Frederic C. Eddowes, Sr. and Helen (Brennan) Eddowes.
David was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Frederic, Jr., Robert and Paul.
David graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School, Red Bank, New Jersey and King’s College in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. In 1969, David received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida Law School.
David’s initial experience of law in the State of New Jersey was in 1970 as the Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Vincent F. Duffy, JSC, Passaic County Superior Court.
In 1971, David started practicing law in the City of Bridgeton, first as an associate in the firm of Davidow & Sherman and then as a partner in the law firm of Davidow, Sherman and Eddowes and Davidow, Sherman, Eddowes & Geiger. In 2001, he became the sole practitioner of David J. Eddowes, Esq., LLC. Over the course of his law career, he served as the Prosecutor for Fairfield Township Municipal Court, Hopewell Township Municipal Court and Upper Deerfield Municipal Court, Solicitor for the Bridgeton Board of Adjustment and Rent Stabilization Board of Pittsgrove Township. He was also a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, Cumberland County Bar Association where he served on the Board of Trustees, Secretary and for several years enjoyed being the Editor for their newsletter “Et Seq.”, Association of Trial Lawyers of America
Before retirement, David became the Deputy Surrogate of Cumberland County from January 2009 through February 2017.
David also loved to sing, dance and attend musical and Broadway shows.
David is survived by his two sister-in-laws, Elizabeth (Betty) Eddowes (Frederic, Jr.) and Larraine Eddowes (Robert); his nieces, Kathleen Eddowes, Elizabeth McIntyre, Denise Love and Yvonne Mann; his nephews, Christopher, Kevin, Gregory and Jeffrey and several cousins.
David is also survived by his friends and caregivers: Karen, Jesus and Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David’s name to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, 1845 Haddon Avenue, Camden, NJ 08103 or any charity of your choosing.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at the Parish of the Holy Cross, St. Teresa of Avila Church, 46 Central Avenue, Bridgeton, New Jersey 08302 on Thursday, May 4th at 11 AM. Written condolences can be sent to the family through the funeral home website at www.padgettfuneralhomes.com.
