If my Dad were here he would start Betty's Eulogy with these words from Proverbs 31,
An Excellent Wife who can find.....?
He would continue.... Betty was far more precious than jewels and his heart trusted in her. She continually sought to do Donald good all the days of her life.
I am not sure what more can possibly be said.
Well Betty did pass away in the middle of Wheel of Fortune. I am not sure Don would have been ok with that. At least it was not in the middle of Jeopardy………….
She called him Dad unless he was in trouble and then she called him Donald Joseph Flanigan. I think I only heard that one time. Well, the other times she was mad, she just called Barbara….
Again from Proverbs 31…. “She worketh willingly with her hands”.
My Mom taught me so many ways of working – painting, spackling (I wish she would have skipped that one!), staining, cooking. She once came into my house, and we were supposed to be painting and she said – Susan – let’s just rip this kitchen out – will Mark be mad? I said no – but what really did I know – she said – if Mark is mad – he will get over it – this kitchen needs a redo!
She also taught me – Susan you do not put peas in that bowl – that bowl is for potatoes. This plate is for meat and for goodness sake you cannot have dinner without biscuits. Where is the butter for the biscuits – you cannot have margarine. Do you think we are living with Aunt Doris?????
I shouldn’t make fun of Aunt Doris because my Mom loved her sisters & brother and her parents with such a fierce, fierce love. She loved you all. You know it.
Mom taught me that loving your family is a privilege and something you should embrace – even if they do not always love you back or in the way you expect. It is not something to be taken lightly because it is a gift from God to be given a family to love.
My Mom loved God. And She loved her church. Again, from Proverbs 31, Betty 'opened her hand to the poor and reached out to the needy'. She did that all her life. My Mother was such a caring person. I don't think there are enough stories I could tell you of how she was helping someone. I always said - she would give you the shirt off her back but she would think that was indecent so she would have to give you money or bake you a cake.
One thing I remember was when she told me she was getting the Covid vaccine. Oh, she was so anti -vaccine. I said - "oh what changed your mind". She said - "blah blah blah......there is a person in our church that needs help, and I cannot help if I don't get the vaccine." So out she went and got vaccinated.
To recall some of the words from our Call to Worship from 1 Corinthians 15.
Behold I tell you a mystery, we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed!
Betty is not sleeping anymore, and she has changed. Donald is not sleeping, and he has changed. They are both changed from a corruptible sick body into an incorruptible spirit. One that has no sin- one that loves completely and is waiting for the rest of us with God.
I am sure that all of you that visited her in the last months would like an explanation or an answer to the question, “Why didn’t she want to get better?” I do not know the answer to that, but my personal belief is that Betty never doubted the hope of heaven and eternal life which was given to her by Jesus dying on the cross. To live with that hope is a gift and I hope that all of us, Christian or not, will grab on to that hope and will embrace eternal life.
Bryan, Stephen, Samuel – Mom loved you so much. We talked almost every night between 9 and 10:30. Now we didn’t always talk about you boys because of course we had to talk about Doris and Diane - most of the time we had to talk about Dad and Mark. Sometimes we had to talk about Uncle Bob!
She just loved you boys so much. I hope you will keep her in your heart and always remember that Mom saw the best in you.
To close, from the end of Proverbs 31, which my mother lived and breathed ......"her children rise up and call her blessed..."
To our Amazing Mom, Betty Wilson Flanigan -------- Bryan, Stephen, Samuel, and I will never forget all the love you gave to us. We will never stop loving you or missing you - we will always rise up and call you "Blessed".

It is hard to believe my dear Aunt Betty is not with us anymore, but I know she is in Heaven now! I will miss going to visit her and Uncle Donald! I will miss her listening ear, her eagerness to get together with friends & family, unplanned shopping trips, watching old movies, and her kindness to me. I will always be grateful she took care of our mom-mom. She gave selflessly to others and will be greatly missed!

Betty was my best friend and my shopping partner. We always had time to go to lunch. She was always there to encourage me and keep me on the right spiritual track. She always ask me to be her helper in different church projects and the next thing I knew I was in charge of it and she was off doing another project. She always stayed busy serving the Lord and loving her family and helping others in the community. A friend I will never forget! Your friend in Christ, Ila.
